Strengthening the Role of Ghanaian Media in Promoting Urban Health Care

The Community-led Responsive and Effective Urban Health Systems (CHORUS) in Ghana is partnering with the media to promote accessible and efficient healthcare in disadvantaged urban communities. Through capacity development, CHORUS aims to raise awareness among journalists and strengthen their commitment to covering issues in urban health systems.

As Dr Ada Nwameme, a lecturer at the School of Public Health, University of Ghana, noted, urban health systems are facing increasing rates of non-communicable diseases. Social determinants such as high population density, inadequate infrastructure, lack of affordable housing, flooding, pollution, congestion, and poverty have contributed to this trend. With 55% of the world’s population living in urban areas and set to increase to 68% by 2050, the urgency of addressing urban health issues cannot be overstated.

Journalists have a critical role in highlighting these issues and communicating health information to broad audiences outside of the academic community. Madam Ivy Agbenu Akushika, a Public Health professional, emphasised the importance of journalists in keeping concerns of urban poor health on the front pages and pressuring lawmakers to enact laws that address the specific needs of the urban poor, particularly their health.

In a nutshell, media coverage of urban health issues can increase public awareness and pressure governments to take action. According to Dr Charity Binka, the Executive Director of Women, Media, and Change (WOMEC), the majority of people learn about medical advancements through the media, whether on television, radio, or the internet. Therefore, journalists must be cautious in disseminating health news to avoid misinterpretation by the public.

The CHORUS partnership with the media in Ghana is a step in the right direction towards addressing urban health issues. With the media playing an essential role in shaping public opinion and influencing policy, the partnership has the potential to improve access to high-quality healthcare for urban communities. By promoting preventative policies, programs, and services at the community level, the CHORUS partnership hopes to make a positive impact on the health and well-being of Ghana’s disadvantaged urban communities.
